Welcome to #KingdomManna on #InspireAfricaProject! Every Sunday, just like today, millions of people gather in different churches to worship God. But the question is, how many of us really know the Person we are worshipping? How many of us have encountered God in such a remarkable way that nothing can make us doubt Him any longer?
Some years back, I got a call from someone whose wife had mental issues. I asked whether they were Christians, and he said yes. He went ahead to tell me that he look his wife to their church and some brethren prayed for her, and she recovered. But few months later, the problem showed up again, and some of his neighbours told him to visit a powerful native doctor, and he did.
I asked him again, are you sure you’re a Christian? He said yes. I said to him, if your wife got healed now, who will take the glory, God or Satan? Maybe you will go for thanksgiving in the church, and after that, you will equally visit the native doctor for another thanksgiving since you can’t really tell who healed your wife.
The true identity of a Christian will always manifest when he or she is facing a difficult challenge. If you fail to be completely dedicated to God, and equally feast on His Word when things are smooth and sweet, if challenges show up you will definitely seek for alternative. Dear friend, are you sure you’re truly a Christian or a pretender? Let’s look at four kinds of Christians.
1. Miracle Seekers. This set of people are always hunting for blessings instead of the Blesser. They are more interested in miracles instead of the Miracle worker Himself. Miracle seekers can attend twenty different churches in a year in search of prosperity, fruit of the womb, miracle jobs, healing, miracle marriage, cars, houses and other things. They are not interested in serving God, they are only looking for what God can give them.
If you open their diaries, you will see the phone numbers of every popular prophet or seer in town. If they see a rat or wall gecko, they will call a man of God to pray for them. These people hardly grow spiritually, they usually end up as spiritual infants the rest of their lives. It’s very dangerous to belong to this category of Christians.
2. Members. The people in this category actually belong to a church, but they are just church fans. They are not ready to serve in any department in the church. If you ask them to join you for evangelism they will run away. If it’s a church that marks attendance and collect dues, they will make sure their names are up to date so that when they die, the church will give them a befitting burial. They are more interested in who will bury them than where they will end up in eternity.
Some wealthy people are in this category. It’s good to sow seeds in the church, but it’s more important to know and serve the God you are sowing the seeds to. Some wealthy individuals see themselves as the sponsors of the church, that’s why some church leaders give them awards on regular basis. Because of the special recognition that are given to them, they end up feeling too big to serve God. They see themselves as the owners of the church whose funeral will be well attended by the church leaders. It’s dangerous to focus on your funeral than where your soul will end up in eternity.
3. Workers. These are the foot soldiers of Jesus Christ on earth. They are always ready to serve in different departments like evangelism department, ushering/church warden department, traffic control etc. They are always around in the church to serve the priest or pastor. Anytime the church authorities are constituting committees, they are usually members. Either they serve in the harvest committee, or church building committee or finance committee. They are always humble and ready to serve in any capacity.
I want to recommend that you become a worker in the church because it attracts uncommon blessings. However, church workers usually focus all their attention on the work not on God. Some of them cannot quote a verse of the Bible verbatim. They are serving the God they don’t know. They hardly pay attention when God’s servants are preaching. Some of them are like Martha who loved to serve Jesus instead of listening to Him like Mary. Some ministers of God are also in this category. They don’t study the Bible to feed their souls, but to preach to others. It’s good to run around for God, but it’s more important to have a relationship with the God you are serving!
4. Followers of Jesus Christ. In as much as I want you to become a worker in the church, don’t forget to become a follower of Jesus Christ. What you’re doing for God should not interfere with your relationship with Him. You must have time to fellowship with Him. Look at the reason why the Apostles elected deacons;
“Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” Acts 6:1-4.
The Apostles were paying more attention to church administration than fellowshipping with God through His Word and in prayer. Many priests, pastors, evangelists, and church leaders are virtually empty right now because they are focusing all their attention on administration. That’s why the thought of iniquity occupy their hearts all the time. You cannot become a Word addict and think about iniquity. There is no way you can spend quality time in prayer and evil thoughts penetrate into your heart. Dear minister, your number one assignment is the Word and prayer not administration! Delegate some of the work just like the Apostles did and go back to your main assignment! When a minister starts thinking about beer and cigarette you know that he has starved his soul and spirit to death!
Dear friend, today’s discussion is not designed to judge you, but to call your attention to the most important thing you should be doing as a Christian. Resign from the congregation of miracles seekers from today and start seeking God. When you get God you will gain access to everything He has. Resign from the congregation of bench warmers who are only interested in being members of a church in case they die. It’s good to become a church worker. But don’t allow what your are doing for God to take you away from Him.
Finally, I want you to become a follower of Jesus Christ. Become a spiritual person. Be like the Berean Christians that usually study the Bible by themselves to know whether what the pastor said is true or not. Become a God addict. Let your dedication to God and His Word become your highest desire in this life, and see how God will decorate your life! Welcome to the week of wonders!
