Welcome to #KingdomManna on #InspireAfricaProject! One of the biggest challenges facing African Christianity is crowd-mentality, or call it groupthink! Some of us hardly study the Bible by ourselves to confirm whether what a “powerful” man of God said is true or not. We swallow every message and prayer pattern hook, line, and sinker. That’s why we have reduced the Holy Spirit to a killer or hired assassin that can be coerced through a thunderous Holy Ghost fireeeeee!
It’s common in Africa to hear prayer points that sounds this way; “Every enemy that said that I will not prosper, Holy Ghost fireeeeee.” “Every uncle that is standing against my miracle marriage, I command the Holy Ghost fire to consume you now!” The question is, have you studied the Bible by yourself to ascertain whether there is anything called Holy Ghost fire that kills people? Why have we reduced the Holy Spirit to an assassin? How can we turn the Holy Spirit to the instrument we can use to destroy our enemies anytime we want?
Am sure you’re already getting angry with what you are reading because it does not conform with what you were taught by a powerful deliverance minister. I have personally refused to join the crowd or follow popular opinion. Let me explain whom the Holy Spirit is to help you understand that killing your enemies is not one of His assignments.
The Holy Spirit is not a dove, but He is as gentle as a dove. If you read what transpired at Jordan when John baptized Jesus, you will discover that the Bible said; “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.” Matthew 3:16. The operative word in this scripture is, ‘like.’ It didn’t say that the dove is the Holy Spirit, but the Holy Spirit appeared or descended like a dove.
The Holy Spirit is not fire, but He purifies like fire. The Holy Spirit is not the power of God, He is God Himself. Jesus said to the Apostles; “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8. The Holy Spirit gives power, but He is not power. For example, if you say to someone; you will receive money when Tony comes, it doesn’t mean that Tony is money. It simply means that Tony is the custodian of the money you’re waiting for.
The Holy Spirit is separate, yet equal, individual, but united part of God. He has all the attributes such as, Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omnipresence. Jesus told to the Apostles the major assignment the Holy Spirit was coming to the earth to carry out before He died. He said; “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” John 14:26.
The Holy Spirit is our Helper! He is not moving from place to place looking for people’s enemy to kill. He started helping us from the beginning. For example, the Holy Spirit helped to restore order on the earth during creation. “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2.
The word translated hovering is “merachepeth,” it means a gentle motion like a dove over its nest, to communicate heat to it’s egg, or to love it’s young. It shows that the Holy Spirit prepared the earth for creation. His role in creation was to make order out of chaos. That means, the Holy Spirit was present on the very day God created the earth, and after Jesus paid the ultimate price on the Cross to save mankind, the Holy Spirit came again to bring order on earth by establishing the Ekklesia!
Jesus died to establish the Kingdom of God on earth, the Holy Spirit came to carry out the assignment of making the establishment a reality. So on the day of Pentecost, He came to help Christians on earth, and the only way to know that He has arrived was to appear like cloven tongues of fire on the heads of the Apostles.
If you read my book, Higher Life In Christ, you will discover how the structure of God’s Kingdom on earth looks like. The moment you surrender your life to Jesus, God will become your President, heaven will become your country, the church will become your embassy, and you will become the ambassador! So what is the role of the Holy Spirit? He is the Governor General of the Ekklesia (church). He empowers, directs, interpret the Kingdom constitution (the Bible), and equally distribute spiritual gifts to believers!
If you search the whole New Testament, you will hardly see anywhere the Holy Spirit consumed people with fire. Rather, the fire is to empower the believers. Talking about Jesus, John the Baptist said; “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Matthew 3:11. Luke recorded the same thing in chapter 3. In Acts chapter 2, the Holy Spirit carried out that baptism which continues till today.
So the question is, where did we get the Holy Ghost fire prayer from in the New Testament? Jesus Christ was concealed in the Old Testament, and was revealed in the New Testament. So Jesus is our perfect example. Did Jesus ever call fire to kill people? Look at what happened in Luke 9:51-56.
“Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?” But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.”And they went to another village.”
The question is, how can this same Jesus send our Helper, the Holy Spirit to kill people with fire instead of saving and empowering them? Dear African Christian, don’t practice any doctrine because a powerful man of God is practicing it! Always sit down with your Bible like the Berean Christians to confirm whether that practice is Biblical or not. Enough of spiritual laziness! The Holy Spirit is not a hired assassin, He is our Helper! Welcome to the week of uncommon testimonies!
