Welcome to #InspireAfricaProject! Most old people prefer to live in the village for one reason: to keep themselves busy. Although their children might be so rich that they can comfortable buy a house for them anywhere in the world, but Mama and Papa will always turn it down. Every morning they wake up early and go to the farm. Mama why are you farming? She will say, “My son you won’t understand.” Mama knows that the secret of longevity is to be busy.
Idleness is the closest street to the cemetery. Living without a target will kill you faster than any disease in this world. The quickest way to visit the cemetery is to exist without having a goal, a task, a project, or a target you’re pursuing. The old woman in the village knows that the day she wakes up without having a task is the day she starts the journey to the grave. If you go to the village right now, you will see them in their farms working as if their lives depends on it. They are simply telling death that they are not ready yet.
According to Dr. George E. Burch, an expert in the study of human longevity, many things determine how long you will live. They are; weight, heredity, diet, psychic, tension, personal habits. But Dr. Burch said, “The quickest way to end is to retire and do nothing. Every human being must keep an interest in life just to keep living.”
Each of us has a choice. Retirement can be the beginning or the end. The “do nothing but eat, sleep, and rock” attitude is the poison-yourself-fast form of retirement. Most folks who regard retirement as the end of purposeful living soon find retirement is the end of life itself. Goals, intense goals, can keep a person alive when nothing else will.
David J. Schwarz shared this powerful story. “Mrs. D. the mother of a college friend of mine, contracted cancer when her son was only two. To darken matters, her husband died only three months before her illness was diagnosed.
Her physicians offered little hope. But Mrs. D. would not give up. She was determined that she would see her two-year-old son through college by operating a small retail store left her by her husband. There were numerous surgical operations. Each time the doctors would say, “Just a few more months.”
The cancer was never cured. But those “few more months” stretched into twenty years! She saw her son graduated from college. Six weeks later she was gone. A goal, a burning desire, was powerful enough to starve off sure death for two decades.”
There is no medicine in this world that can prolong life. The doctors told Mrs D. that she would die in few months time. But having a target kept her alive. Anytime she feels like giving up, she would remember her goal, and encouraged herself.
King Solomon said, “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” When you don’t have any reason to live, you begin to die. Living without direction is existing without a reason. Living without vision, target, or goals is living without wisdom. Living without a target guarantees age without change!
Having a goal or a target gives you a cogent reason to wake up in the morning with joy. I usually say that when you see a man who struggles to get up from his bed every morning, you’re looking at a visionless man. When he remembers that another morning has paid him a visit, he would simply sigh. He wonders why he is still alive.
People commit suicide when there is nothing to look forward to. When they look around they see nothing. When they look into their future, they see nothing that can inspire them. So they conclude that the best thing to do is to take their own lives. But that is not the best option. In fact, it’s not an option at all. If you’re facing that kind of challenge right now, you need to talk to someone. You need a dose of inspiration.
Having something you’re looking forward to accomplishing is a powerful force that guarantees longevity. So go to a quiet place within this week, and set life changing goals in four major areas: family, work, finance and spiritual life. The simplest way to do it is to ask yourself, “What am I looking forward to in the next five, ten, fifteen or twenty years?” In other words, between now and 2037, what do I want to accomplish in these four areas?
The best way to do it is to write down every thought that pops up on your mind. It may not make sense, but keep writing. Keep reading the list throughout that day until the things you wrote down begin to sift itself. Spend quality time the following day to harness the list by eliminating the unimportant things.
By the time you’re through, you will be looking at your future. Meet a graphic artist to turn some of them into pictures. If you have a separate room you can call your Idea Room or Thinking Room, go in there and paste the pictures on the wall. Spend one solid hour or more daily to just look at those pictures. The more you look at them, the more real they become, and the easier it is to achieve.
Never ever get to a point where you don’t have a goal or vision you want to actualize. Don’t ever wake up in to the morning without knowing what to do. Give yourself a lifetime assignment. If you can get your mind and body busy, you will live longer than you ever imagined as long as you’re not living a rough lifestyle.
When Lot chose the better part of the land and separated from Abraham, I believe Abraham was somehow demoralized. I believe he wondered whether he would one day attain the height God described to him. I’m sure he looked on the rough hilly Canaan and wondered where to go from there. God saw his mood and told him to paint a picture that would keep him busy. This is what God said to Abraham;
“…Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.” Genesis 13:14-15.
A phrase usually blow my mind anytime I read this portion of the scripture. God said to Abraham, “All the land you see I will give to you and your defendants forever.” It simply means that any picture of the future Abraham captured, he would attain. In fact, to God, Abraham was limiting himself by looking at what was going on around him. God wanted him to look beyond the present challenges and capture the picture of the kind of future he desired.
I’m one hundred percent sure that God has been waiting for you to capture the picture of your future too. God said that whatever you see, as long as it’s not evil, He would give it to you and your descendants if you believe.
So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and paint that powerful picture and hand them over to God while you’re doing your part. Any picture you capture today and believe in from the depth of your heart will definitely become your own self-fulfilling prophecy.
